There seems to be no shortage of IEMs these days, especially in the $50-$100 range. While this is starting to lead to an oversaturation of the market, it also means we are starting to see better and more detail-sounding IEMs at lower prices. Enter the InAwaken Dawn-MS dynamic driver IEM. This company seems relatively new as I have never heard of them before seeing this IEM, but for $50 USD these IEMs seem very promising, so let’s get into it.

The overall packaging is fairly standard for Chi-Fi IEMs, which is a good thing as it means the box is efficiently packed and materials and IEMs are safely stored. The unboxing experience for the InAwaken Dawn-Ms is particularly well done though, with the IEMs beautifully displayed when you open the box, and all the accessories neatly stored in easy-to-access and minimalistic packaging.

Design & Comfort

The Dawn-Ms is constructed from a medical grade, 3D printed resin body with accents of CNC precision-machined aluminum, and it looks absolutely stunning. The body itself is smooth and feels nice to hold. It’s also transparent so you can see in detail the internal components. The dynamic driver is visible, with the InAwaken name etched on the side of it. I always appreciate being able to see those little details.

The faceplate of the IEMs has this really interesting and unique artistic pattern, that is apparently hand drawn and etched into the aluminum, then sealed so the exterior of it is smooth. The unit I received is blue, and sometimes green depending on the light, with an absolutely beautiful pattern. They did a really good job here. The InAwaken logo is present on the bottom of the faceplate and strikes a great balance in my opinion of not being too flashy or loud.

Comfort-wise, the InAwaken Dawn-Ms has an excellent fit. It feels ergonomic and fits nicely with the contours of my ear. The nozzle diameter is also 6.2mm, which is just right for my ears. I never had any discomfort while wearing them, and at times, I even forgot I had them in as I was listening to music. Interestingly the nozzle length is slightly shorter than other IEMs. It didn’t affect the comfort for me, but it may be an issue for some with larger ears. I suspect it won’t be an issue for most people though.

The included cable is your basic OFC (oxygen free copper) shielded 2-pin to 3.5mm cable. It’s not terrible but it’s not great either, with a plasticky feel to it. For this price range though it is acceptable, and the cable is the easiest thing to change out if needed.

I really like the included zipper travel case. It’s by far one of the better ones I’ve seen, especially for $50 IEMs. It’s strong and durable, has a good thickness as well as a nice rubberized feel to it. It’s also large enough to contain the IEMs, cable, ear tips, and even a dongle DAC, such as the iFi GO link, without having to jam them in.

The InAwaken Dawn-Ms is a dynamic driver IEM, which sounds boring, but trust me, it’s not. The 11.2mm dynamic driver has a sputter disposition purple-gold diaphragm to allow both low frequency elasticity and high frequency performance. The Dawn-Ms also has a bass superposition system, which is part of the 3D printing technique, to allow more air into the back cavity of the driver. In theory, this allows for even more bass impact and performance than is typically possible with single DD IEMs.

At 32 ohms and a sensitivity of 110 dB, it is incredibly easy to drive. From a smartphone or laptop, it sounds great, with good dynamics and range, and more than enough volume. Plugging it into a dongle DAC or desktop DAC/Amp gives you a bit more dynamic range and more richness regardless of what volume you’re at, meaning they scale nicely.

Technicalities aside, how does it actually sound? In short, it sounds wonderful. Let’s forget the $50 price for the moment and focus solely on the sound performance. It’s incredibly clear and resolving with good timbre, and has a nice mid-bass bass thump to it. Overall the Dawn-Ms has a good balance across the frequency range. This means it has a relaxed enough sound profile that is ideal for long listening sessions, as they won’t be fatiguing, but still provide detail and dynamics that won’t sound boring or flat.

Bass

There is some deep sub-bass with good extension, but you will really notice the mid-bass. It’s punchy, not much rumble, and has lots of texture and body. Despite the thickness of the mid-bass there is no bleeding into the upper frequencies. It’s satisfying and just lovely to listen to.

Midrange

The mids are detailed and very natural sounding. The low-mids especially are full sounding, which benefits male vocals by allowing you to hear the depth to them. The mids overall are clean and dry, giving you a transparent and unaltered sound here.

Treble

There is really good extension through the treble range, providing lots of room and detail, especially in the upper treble. This means the treble is smooth and detailed, yet there is no sibilance to speak of. It makes for very relaxing listening sessions. The detail and texture are present and very noticeable in sounds like cymbal hits, which I found very satisfying. Why? Because I could hear them without my ears being affected by any piercing sounds. Very enjoyable.

Soundstage and Imaging

The Dawn-Ms has a good soundstage for an IEM. I sensed a good amount of space, but it was a bit flat. There’s more width than verticality, which really doesn’t affect the sound too much unless you are really looking for it. Imaging on the other hand is excellent. It’s detailed, with accurate instrument placement, and enough detail to separate them. I did try some gaming with these IEMs and they were actually very good in terms of directionality. If you play games that emphasize 3D space, especially height, then performance is just ok, due to the flattened soundstage.

After reading all that, let’s look again at the price. $50 USD. That is honestly amazing value for this kind of sound profile. I really found myself enjoying songs such as Six Blade Knife by Dire Straits, and Control by Big Wreck. Those songs have the exact qualities that the InAwaken Dawn-Ms performs exceptionally at. For other music genres, such as classical, jazz, and electronic, they also sound great on the Dawn-Ms. Female vocals can sound a little thin, lacking body, but because the other aspects of the sound are so good, I quickly forgot and just enjoyed the music.

Final Thoughts

The InAwaken Dawn-Ms is an extremely versatile IEM, and most importantly the price is just right. If you are looking for an entry-level IEM in the $50 range, this is the perfect one to start your IEM journey. They are comfortable, the sound is relaxed, detailed, and accessible, with good bass, and they look extremely attractive. I hope to see more products from InAwaken because they seem to know what they’re doing.
