I’m very fond of digital audio players, or MP3 players, depending on when you were born. They provide a dedicated, distraction-free way to enjoy your music while offering features that smartphones often lack, including physical playback controls, expandable storage, dedicated DAC and amplifier hardware, and balanced headphone outputs.
The database below lets you compare DAPs by price, operating system, size, output power, storage, wireless features and more. It is not intended to include every player ever released as I’ve focused on models that are currently available, popular, notable, or worth considering.
I continually update this guide as new players are released and additional information becomes available. Known issues and important limitations are included wherever possible.
How to Choose
If a DAP has my “HiFi-Dawson quick picks” option, it is my recommendation. I always recommend that you identify your budget, use case and requirements, and listening workflow (how you listen to music) beforehand to help narrow things down. If you have any questions or need some help, feel free to reach out to me here, via the Comments section at the end of the page, or on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/HiFiOasis/
Be sure to also check my YouTube channel for reviews and comparisons of various DAPs. This is the dedicated playlist for it: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWxNcsSIFeoilJBe2z_UZkMVVCjVU04wr
How Big Are DAPs?
Specifications can tell you the dimensions and weight, but they don’t communicate how a DAP feels in your hand or pocket. These side-by-side photos provide a better real-world reference. Select any image below to view it at full size.
