Apple has unveiled its latest wireless earbuds, the AirPods 4, as well as an updated AirPods Max, and new features for the AirPods Pro 2 during the ‘It’s Glowtime’ iPhone 16 event. Let’s dive into all the details.
AirPods 4 – Now Two Models
It’s been nearly two years since Apple’s last AirPods update in October 2021. The AirPods 3 brought a fresh design and Spatial Audio, while the AirPods 2 remained available at a lower price point. Now, Apple aims to replace both with the AirPods 4 line, offering two distinct models.
Before we explore the differences, here’s what both versions share:
AirPods 4 sport a design reminiscent of AirPods 3, with subtle refinements. While not a radical departure, the new look brings welcome improvements.
The star of the show is the H2 chip, powering impressive audio enhancements. This new silicon enables features like Voice Isolation and Personalized Spatial Audio, elevating the listening experience to new heights.
Apple has crafted two AirPods 4 variants:
A premium model boasting Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode, and Adaptive Audio. This version caters to listeners seeking the ultimate in-ear experience.
A more affordable option that, while lacking those advanced features, still delivers the new design and other modern upgrades at a budget-friendly price point.
Both AirPods 4 models are available for pre-order starting today, with shipments beginning September 20.
Updated AirPods Max
Since their 2020 debut, AirPods Max have become increasingly popular. While many anticipated a second-generation release, Apple surprised (possibly disappointed?) us with enhancements to the original model.
The most eye-catching update? New color options: Starlight. Midnight, Purple, Orange, Blue.
In a move towards uniformity, Apple has also equipped the AirPods Max with USB-C charging. This change aligns with the company’s gradual shift to a universal USB-C standard across its device range and phasing out the Lightning connector.
Finally, Apple revealed that iOS 18 would bring Personalized Spatial Audio to AirPods Max. However, it’s not clear if this involves a new H2 chip or other audio features previously exclusive to AirPods Pro.
From what I can gather, the core features of AirPods Max remain unchanged, save for the new colors and USB-C port.
The updated AirPods Max are now available for pre-order, with shipping starting September 20.
They maintain their price point of $549.
