Material and Finish

The Diablo 2, dressed in a striking Devilish Red, marks a significant departure from its predecessor, the Diablo-X. This new iteration not only enhances visual appeal but also integrates advanced features. The case adopts a slotted, rounder shape with angular curves, reminiscent of the Zen series, which not only adds to its modern look but also aids in ergonomics. The construction quality is excellent, with every component, including jacks and knobs, aligning perfectly and functioning seamlessly. This is an aspect that iFi is greatly known for and it’s pleasing to see this trend continue. The front and rear panels feature a cutting-edge design that contributes to the overall sleek and sturdy feel of the unit.

Ergonomics and Usability

Looking at the back of the Diablo 2, we have an input selection button to toggle between the various inputs (wired mode, Bluetooth, and Bluetooth pairing). The addition of a combo SPDIF port and two USB-C ports—one for charging and the other for data input—allows for versatile use both as a desktop source and a portable device. This flexibility is further supported by the inclusion of customizable ‘wings.’ These wings, which come in both flat and angled variants, can be slotted into the device to stand it at various angles, improving accessibility and convenience when used on a desk.

The rear of the device also features a 4.4mm port that serves dual purposes: as a DAC line out or an analog input, enabling users to utilize the Diablo 2 either as a DAC/Amp combo or a standalone amplifier.

On the front, from left to right, we have a single-ended 6.35mm output, 4.4mm balanced and xMEMS output, xMEMS toggle, which allows for the use of xMEMS driver headphones, Power Mode (gain) selector, LED to indicate input mode and audio format, a lock for the volume knob to prevent unintended volume changes during transport, and a rather satisfying and smooth volume knob that doubles as the on/off switch.

Finally, on the very bottom of the device, is the iEMatch switch.

Everything about the iFi iDSD Diablo 2 feels solid and sturdy. The weight and material texture of it really gives you the impression that it’s a premium device, and the angles and ridges remind you that something devilish awaits inside.

Technical Highlights

At the heart of the Diablo 2 lies the 16-core XMOS processor, paired with iFi Audio’s custom OV series operational amplifiers and a customized Burr Brown DAC section. These components ensure robust digital audio processing and high-fidelity sound reproduction. The device supports a wide array of digital formats, including MQA hardware unfolding, Bitperfect PCM, and DSD up to 768kHz and DSD512.

A significant upgrade in this model is the inclusion of Qualcomm’s QCC518x BT5.4 receiver, which introduces support for the latest Bluetooth codecs such as LDAC, aptX, SBC, and AAC, enhancing wireless listening experiences. Notably, the Diablo 2 is the first portable DAC/Amp to support aptX Lossless, allowing for CD-quality streaming over Bluetooth without compromising audio quality.

For those using highly sensitive in-ear monitors (IEMs), iEMatch is a standout feature and one that we have seen on portable devices such as the iFi hip-dac 3 (see our review here). It effectively reduces background noise and balances slight channel imbalances. IT can be applied to both the 6.35mm and 4.4mm outputs.

The device also features three power modes that are effectively gain modes—Normal, Turbo, and Nitro—to accommodate a wide range of headphones, from IEMs to power-hungry planar magnetics. Each mode adjusts the battery life and output power to optimize performance and user experience (meaning the higher power modes will use more battery).

One fascinating technology that is supported by the Diablo 2 is xMEMS solid-state speaker technology. There are not many headphones or IEMs available that are built around this technology, so I wasn’t able to test it. Still, the technology itself is intriguing, and with the Diablo 2 supporting it, you have some future-proofing here.

Bluetooth

You have to give credit to iFi here, they really try to make sure all bases are covered when it comes to thinking about how users want to listen to audio. This is evident with the inclusion of Bluetooth 5.4 and the support for essentially all Bluetooth codecs. On Android, you have to download their Gaia app from the iFi website manually and sideload the APK, which is unfortunate and in my opinion an unnecessary step (I said as much in my review of the iFi ZEN Stream).

Sound Quality

Power Output

The Diablo 2 outputs over 2 watts RMS at 32Ω on the single-ended output and the same on the balanced 4.4mm tap at 64Ω. This power is more than sufficient to drive almost any headphone comfortably, ensuring robust performance across a diverse range of audio equipment. I had no issues driving any of the headphones listed above.

Sound Characteristics

The iFi iDSD Diablo 2 is not just about power; it’s also about delivering a sound quality that resonates with both clarity and warmth. The device features a sound signature that leans on the brighter side of the spectrum, yet retains the traditional iFi warmth that enriches the listening experience. This combination allows for detailed retrieval that feels vibrant and full, rather than merely a collection of sharp acoustic notes.

In terms of tonal balance, the Diablo 2 offers a rich, almost organic quality to its audio reproduction. The bass reaches deep and carries significant weight without overwhelming the mid and high frequencies. Highs are spread evenly, providing a near-neutral response that complements the overall tonality. The transient response is exceptional, keeping you engaged across the frequency response curve, with a note weight that adds a substantial feel to the music.

Getting into my nitpicks, I noticed the upper treble has a bit more of an energy or sharpness to it, which sometimes made listening a bit fatiguing. The Diablo 2’s overall sound profile is on the aggressive side, which I suppose was intentional given the name.

I enjoy listening to the Diablo 2 and appreciate the immersive soundstage. It’s technically accurate and scales extremely well with whichever headphones or IEMs you are using. The better the headphones, the better it performs. What it comes down to though is can YOU keep up with the Diablo 2?

Bluetooth Audio Performance

Pairing the iFi iDSD Diablo 2 with my Galaxy Fold 5, I was able to get an LDAC connection and listen to FLAC files stored on my smartphone through the Diablo 2 without any wires connecting them. The sound quality was excellent, and honestly, the whole experience was simple to do. As I stated before, my main gripe is having to download the Gaaia Android app from iFi’s website and install it manually. Otherwise, I think it’s amazing what iFi is able to accomplish here with Bluetooth.

For desktop applications, the Diablo 2 provides a balanced 4.4mm line input/output, which can be used to connect to active speakers or amplifiers with volume control. This setup is ideal for audiophiles who wish to integrate the Diablo 2 into a larger home audio system without compromising sound quality. The fixed volume output from the 4.4mm connector ensures consistent audio levels, providing a reliable and high-quality audio output for all connected devices.
