The Best Digital Audio Players (DAPs) of 2026

This guide extensively contains the best Digital Audio Players of 2026 for every budget, offering insights into their design, performance, and value.
Best Digital Audio Players

I’m very fond of digital audio players (or MP3 players, depending on when you were born). They’re a great way to enjoy listening to music without the distractions of using your smartphone or a computer. On top of that, many DAPs (Digital Audio Players) have hardware and software features that smartphones simply cannot implement, as they will compromise the intended experience of using those devices. Features like dedicated 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced outputs, dedicated DAC and amp chips for those outputs, microSD card support, and physical playback buttons, just to name a few.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ve compiled a list of what I believe are the best digital audio players for each price category. Not every available DAP will be in this guide, as I’ve decided to focus on ones that are either widely available, highly acclaimed, or popular.

This guide will be continually updated and expanded, so check back regularly to see all the updated content. If there are any “gotchas” or known issues with a DAP, I will list them in the specs section for each DAP under “notes”. Dimensions are listed for all DAPs, but check the images in the section below to get a reference for the size of each one.

I’ve also added a section with my go-to picks if you have trouble deciding within your budget. If you have any questions or need some help, feel free to reach out to me here or on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/HiFiOasis/

DAP Sizes

Below are several pictures to help you understand the sizes of various DAPs (click the image for a larger version):

HiFi-Dawson’s Quick Picks

Note: Clicking the device name will bring you to it further down the list.

Under $100

SnowSky Echo Mini ($52.99)

Who should choose this?

  • Those who want a simple, straightforward device that goes back to the days of the classic MP3 player. If your needs are simple, this is the DAP to get.

What are the downsides?

  • No gapless playback support, a track limit of 8192 tracks, only supports microSD cards up to 256GB, no playlist support, button navigation is tiring to use if you need to scroll through long lists.

Note: If you want an alumumnum build and slightly more output power, the SnowSky Echo is available and is otherwise the same as the Echo Mini.

HiBy R1 (~$75)

Who should choose this?

  • Users who want form and functionality but do not need lots of output power or a 4.4mm balanced connection. Modern Bluetooth support, USB DAC functionality, large library support, and excellent battery life, the R1 provides a lot for the price.

What are the downsides?

  • HiBy OS has its own quirks regarding library sorting and metadata. The UI can also lag at times if you use large album art. The limited output power of the 3.5mm SE output means you won’t be able to fully drive many over-ear headphones.

Under $200

Check out my video where I talk about three different $200 DAP options (plus a couple of bonus options): https://youtu.be/KRWKN-Lz_e8?si=XJDDN15gJi_X4k0E

Surfans F20 / HiFi Walker H2 ($124)

Who should choose this?

  • Those who prefer physical controls vs a touchscreen, but still want a DAP with modern features. If you want a DAP with good Rockbox support, look no further.

What are the downsides?

  • Stock OS lacks many quality-of-life features, and also seems to only support about 15,000 tracks (this is all resolved by installing Rockbox). Background hiss can also be heard when using sensitive to moderately sensitive IEMs.

HIDIZS AP80 PRO MAX ($189)

Who should choose this?

  • Those looking for a portable, well-built DAP with support for PEQ. One of the most stable HiBy OS DAPs I have used. Pairs very well with most IEMs and efficient over-ear headphones.

What are the downsides?

  • Runs HiBy OS, so if you don’t like the UI or lack of customization, you will need to look elsewhere. Also exhibits some background hiss when used with very sensitive IEMs.

Shanling M1 Plus ($200)

Who should choose this?

  • Users who do not need Android but still want an excellent-sounding DAP with lots of features and superb build quality.

What are the downsides?

  • The lower resolution screen sometimes degrades album art. Track limit of 20,000 tracks unless using the file browser.

Under $350

FiiO JM21 – ($240)

Who should choose this?

  • If you want an Android DAP that doesn’t feel slow or underpowered, but also doesn’t break the bank.

What are the downsides?

  • The default music player, FiiO Music, has many quirks. Using very sensitive IEMs, some background hiss can be heard (especially with the 4.4mm output).

FiiO M21 ($339)

Who should choose this?

  • Those who want the best price/performance Android DAP that doesn’t cut corners on build or audio quality.

What are the downsides?

  • The FiiO Music app is quirky to use at times. Some popping sounds can be heard when using the NOS filter.

Under $550

ONIX Tocata XM2 ($439)

Who should choose this?

  • If you like the Shanling M1 Plus OS and build, the Onix XM2 is an improved version of it with a much nicer screen, more output power, and a cleaner and more natural sound.

What are the downsides?

  • Battery life is just average, and the device runs a bit warm.

iBasso DX180 ($529)

Who should choose this?

  • Users who demand a bright and high-resolution screen, excellent battery life, and a replaceable battery. Sound quality is also one of the best at this price point IMHO.

What are the downsides?

  • The built-in EQ is only available through the default music player (Mango). The edges of the device are also fairly sharp when handling.

Under $1000

HiBy R6 Pro II 2025 ($699)

Who should choose this?

  • Users who want a very clean and highly resolving sound, and value the option of using a class A amp.

What are the downsides?

  • The DAP itself is fairly big, not the most portable. Using the class A amp drastically reduces battery life.

iBasso DX260 MK2 ($949)

Who should choose this?

  • Those seeking a neutral-sounding DAP with a dark background, providing an emphasis on clarity and instrument separation. The battery is also user-replaceable.

What are the downsides?

  • A little too large and heavy to be considered portable. The built-in EQ is only available through the default music player (Mango).

Surfans F20 Pro

surfans f20 pro

  • Small screen is sometimes hard to use, and some apps don’t fit very well (Apple Music, Qobuz). But the overall touchscreen experience is pretty good.
  • Really liking it so far, keep an eye out for this one.

Shanling M3 Plus (potentially discontinued)

Shanling M3 Plus

Full review coming soon. My initial impressions:

  • Fantastic build quality.
  • Android OS feels smooth to use.
  • Volume wheel is a little too sensitive, in my opinion.
  • Built-in music player app does not support gapless playback, and has limited sorting options (can’t view by Album Artist tag, for example). Recommend using a 3rd party music app to get a better experience.
  • Price: $469 USD
  • Connections: 3.5mm SE output, 4.4mm Balanced output, USB-C (charging, data)
  • Output power: 3.5mm SE (200mW), 4.4mm balanced (800mW)

  1. Might be worth mentioning that the Hiby R4 EVA, for $25 more, has 4GB RAM instead of the standard 3GB in the other models.

  2. Hi!
Thanks for this huge list. is it sorted in any way? I mean, the first of the each list is your preference in each price group? If not, do you have preferences?

    1. No problem! It is sorted by price in ascending order to remove any bias on my part. For DAPs where I have done full reviews, the reviews are linked.

I do have my own preferences, but my goal is to try and help everyone get the best DAP that meets their own requirements, use cases, and budget.

If you’re looking for something specific, what’s your budget and requirements? I would be able to suggest something based on that information.

  3. Thank you for the comprehensive guide – this was what I was hoping to find. I wonder if you have a recommendation of a first DAP for children ages 8-10? I’m hoping to avoid a device that looks like a smartphone if possible. I’d ideally like to load it up with my kids’ favorite songs and let them use it like a Walkman (or early iPod). I’d happily pay up to $200 for something that fits the bill, is user-friendly, and doesn’t put my children at risk of encountering strange things on the internet. I really appreciate your putting your expertise and hard work out there to the benefit of us all. (It’s so nice when the internet is a friendly and helpful place!)

    1. I think the SnowSky Echo Mini is a great option for your use case. It does have limitations (256GB microSD card limit, max number of tracks is 8192, doesn’t support gapless playback), but if none of those matter to you, it’s a good and inexpensive option. The Bluetooth on it is also decent, despite only supporting the SBC codec.

For a more proper DAP experience, the HiBy R1 is fantastic. It’s plastic, so fairly durable, and doesn’t have internet access other than for streaming Tidal and Qobuz. The Bluetooth on it is also much better than on the Echo Mini. Given the age of your kids, though, I think the Echo Mini is a great option.

  4. Thanks HiFi-Dawson for this great list. Can you please include the dimensions (LxWxH) of each product to help with decision making?
